The Varaflames

2000 Throwing Shapes

The Varaflames are an intermittent Rab Noakes project. The basic tracks for this album were recorded after a short tour of (mostly) Scotland in early 1995. (The one English gig was at the King's Head in Allendale, Northumberland, in January of that year). This brought together Rab, Rod on bass, acoustic dobro, and electric guitar, and mandolin, Pick Withers on drums, and Fraser Speirs, whose blues harmonica wizardry was thereby brought to Rod's attention, leading directly to his involvement on Stamping Ground. The tapes lay in the studio untouched for five years, at the end of which time Rab called in some others to assist in putting the finishing touches to the record.
