Solo

1994, 2001 & 2008 One Track Mind

In contrast to Rod's subsequent studio albums, which are made up exclusively of new material, the original incarnation of One Track Mind was a sort of musical resumé, a journey through 'the story so far'. It originally existed only on cassette, available at gigs, and by post from Dave Ian Hill. It was intended to be an all-acoustic strictly solo venture, and produced in deepest Northumberland by Geoff Heslop. This approach was retained for a couple of tracks, but the rest were revamped as semi-electric using the then Lindisfarne rhythm section of Ray Laidlaw and Steve Cunningham, at Ray's Hi Level studio in Newcastle.

Rod recalls:

'We did about 4 gigs in 1994: Kings Head, Allendale; the Maggie Bank; Front Page Club, Carlisle; and the Total Disaster I'd Rather Forget About, Scarborough.'

The eleven tracks which appear on the cassette include three solo versions of Rod's own classic compositions, long since familiar from the Lindisfarne repertoire. These are:

Train In G Major; Road To Kingdom Come; Meet Me On The Corner.

Also written or co-written by Rod are:

Leather Launderette; No Turning Back (instrumental).

The remaining six tracks were drawn from cover versions, worthy tributes to the musicians who had themselves influenced and inspired Rod. These were:

Hard Travelling (Woody Guthrie); Train That Carried My Girl From Town, a traditional song previously recorded by Frank Hutchison and arranged here by Rod; Bourgeois Blues (Leadbelly); Ain't No More Cane (another traditional song arranged by Rod); Down In The Flood (Bob Dylan), and Evil Hearted Woman (Oscar Woods).

One Track Mind made a thoroughly welcome appearance on CD on the 5th of March 2001. Three bonus instrumentals are included, these being Long Vehicle, Sneaky Suspension and Piston Broke Again. A further change is that a quite different version of No Turning Back appears this time of asking.

One Track Mind 2008 comprises seventeen tracks, including everything available on the two previous incarnations, with the CD bonus tracks and BOTH versions of No Turning Back, PLUS two previously unreleased Rod Clements compositions - A Dream Within a Dream and Blues For a Dying Season.
