Best known as the bass player of Steeleye Span, Rick Kemp brought Rod in to play dobro on one track, Deep in the Darkest Night. The album was recorded for the Fellside lable. Rick, who is married to Maddy Prior, used to play bass for Michael Chapman, but left him in the early seventies to join Steeleye Span. His parting shot was to recommend Rod as his replacement, which he duly became. |
'That would be good, yeah. I do fancy doing some stuff on my own because it's a bit of demon with me. I watch all these other people doing it, like Rod (Clements) and of course Michael's (Chapman) been doing it for years and I have the hankering. When I saw Rod go out and do it ... drop his bass and do all that incredible work on slide... I thought to myself that it's really wimpish not to go and do it on my own.''Rod's guitar playing is just something else! Because that's where we all want to be, as a bass player. We all want to say "Oh, sod that! I've had enough of that, let's go and do something proper!." And Rod did. I thought it would be nice to get him on the album. He did two things, and the other one I'd like to put on the next album. It's a a song which is already on this album as a sort of garage band bash, and we've got a slow version of it with Rod playing some beautiful stuff, which we're gonna use on the next one hopefully.'
