The name of Dando Shaft came up one time on the message forum, and I asked Rod to elucidate. His response was:
'Named after a character in a novel, Dando Shaft were an acoustic prog-folk group from the West Midlands who supported the original Lindisfarne a few times in the very early 70s. Some of them went on to other things, notably Polly Bolton (singer)- Bert Jansch, Albion Band; Martin Jenkins (mandocello/flute/violin)- Hedgehog Pie, Bert Jansch, Whippersnapper; Kevin Dempsey (guitar)- Whippersnapper & solo. In 1976, I played with Martin in a short-lived version of the Bert Jansch band (Bert, Martin, me, Pick Withers) which did one Scandinavian tour but never recorded.Dando Shaft re-formed briefly in the late 70s to make an album called Kingdom for Tyneside label Rubber Records. They brought me in to play bass on a couple of tracks. I still hear from Martin occasionally. He, Polly and myself all contributed (separate) tracks to last year's Bert Jansch tribute album on Market Square, People on the Highway.
I think that about covers it!'
