The Academicals

1977 Time is Tight - single

This was a strictly one-off recording by Rod, Michael Chapman, and Keef Hartley.

I'll let Rod take up the story from here:

'I genuinely forgot about this, the only recording by said trio which did many European tours. I don't know why Michael (for it was his band) chose to be pseudonymous.

The A-side was a cover of Booker T's Time is Tight, which was a staple of our live set and the B-side was an original instrumental of which I remember nothing at all, not even the title. We recorded it in John Kongos's basement in London.'

The long (and best?) forgotten B-side title was of course Ee By Gum, It's Cold. Rod has a vague recollection that Keef may have been responsible for the choice of name.

The image at the 'head' of the page is the Belgian version of the front cover, while in France they had to make do with the rather less adventurous one below.

It seems that the single was also released in the United Kingdom but we had to get by without a picture sleeve, for some reason.

Top marks to Mike Clayton for the scans and for bringing this obscure piece of musical history to my attention - too bad that it represents the sum total of the Academicals' curriculum vitae!
